Mechanical String Quartet 

Also featured in What If?, Hersrud exhibited String Quartet, a series of four plotter-based monoprints (38 × 46 cm each, Strathmore Bristol paper, yellow permanent marker, and black ballpoint pen). Similar to the project Orbital Frequencies, this body of work was developed through live “plotter performances,” using the mechanical act of drawing as both a sonic and visual process. The basic idea behind these drawings was to push the limits of the drawing tools themselves, seeing how the pen and ploter behaves in reaction to the shape, and how the sound of the pen and gear mechanisms shift frequencies while making the work.
