	Nonlinear is a portal of inquiry established by multidisciplinary designer, graphic+sonic artist and educator Michael Hersrud. His exploratory creative practice involves analog, audiovisual, automation, data, drawing, dérive, geography, geometry, language, layering, looping, patterns, performance, printmaking, sound, space, surface and systems. The resulting projects, often collaborative, investigate experiences, interactions &#38;amp; phenomena. Michael is the co-director of the Sonic Jeel Research Lab.

	&#38;nbsp;Audiovisual Experiments&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
This work takes inspiration from early animation and sound pioneers such as Oskar Fischinger, John Whitney Sr., &#38;amp; Mary Ellen Bute. These are three looping audiovisual experiments as part of an ongoing project for Sonic Jeel. The visuals are being triggered by audio event and frequencies using modular synthesizers. Outcomes were shown at Acts of Listening from Future Generations, an exhibition exploring contemporary approaches to sound and listening in Qatar sponsored by Qatar Museums, and curated by David Felipe Suárez.

	&#38;nbsp;Graphic Notations&#38;nbsp;

This series of four digital vector drawings operates as graphic musical scores that remain intentionally open to the performer’s interpretation. Developed through an exploratory process with MIDI devices in Ableton Live, the notations translate sonic potential into visual form while embracing indeterminacy. Inspiration for the visual language is loosely based on Sadu patterns. The work represents an early phase of a broader audiovisual research project that investigates alternative systems of notation and the interplay between sound and grapic image.

At -162°C natural gas becomes liquid. LNG is Qatar’s main export, with Japan being its largest customer and a primary source of revenue. Although mostly economic, this exchange impacts the culture, lifestyle, and geopolitics of both countries. To make this information tangible, a kinetic installation consisting of 40 printers suspended from the ceiling and ‘perform’ through sound, movement and printed graphics to interact with the audience.&#38;nbsp;

The FIFA World Cup was held in Doha, Qatar in 2022. For a decade leading up to that moment, the entire country is in a state of transformation, both physically and ideologically. These two large format banner-prints on fabric commemorate and confront that transformation.

	Desert-Robot-Luxury.


This editorial typography project investigates linguistic fragments, both audio and visual, from the local milieu and media ecology of the Arabian Peninsula, reframing them through processes of remix and visual translation. The resulting compositions gesture toward the complexities of Gulf life, employing satire as a subtle analytical tool rather than overt commentary. Aesthetically, the work references carbonless receipt paper as a metaphor for social and cultural transactions of the past. 99 A4 flyers were created as part of a personal daily design excercise during COVID.

The first flyer I designed to promote the newly formed Sonic Jeel collective. The collective began in 2019 with the first performance scheduled for 2020, right when COVID happened. The two-color RISO print and beautiful typographic chaos pays homage to the Dadaist &#38;amp; Emigre Magazine is now in the SJ archives.
